 Overview of the Education System in the UK

The education system is divided into 4 levels: Primary, Secondary, Further, and Higher Education. These ranks are divided into different stages based on each different age. In particular, Primary and Secondary are compulsory programs, which are considered equivalent to Primary and High School in Vietnam.

Primary 

Age range: 5 – 11 years old  This level includes stages 1 and 2 of the 4 compulsory education stages of the UK Education System. At this level, students will have to study compulsory subjects such as Math, English and Social Sciences.

Secondary

Age range: 11 - 16 years old  The level includes stages 3 and 4, which are important stages for students because they will need to prepare and be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to practice for final exams (GCSEs).

Further Education

Age: Over 16 years old  This is a stepping stone stage for you to fully equip the knowledge and skills necessary for Higher Education. 

Students after graduating from high school will have 2 choices:

  • Academic: Students will study a 2-year program that provides an overview of the subjects you want to study more deeply when entering University and must pass the A-Levels exam.
  • Vocational: Students can choose to study for a vocational certificate, focusing on practice and practical experience rather than focusing on learning specialized theoretical knowledge.

Higher Education

Higher Education includes Undergraduate and Postgraduate course levels, offered by universities and colleges.  Most international students enroll at this level.

Higher Education System in the UK

Higher education in the UK is provided by different types of educational institutions, including research institutes, colleges and universities. These institutions will offer different degrees such as bachelor's degree (undergraduate degree), master's degree and doctorate degree (postgraduate degree) and other diplomas/certificates.

Bachelor

A bachelor's degree is the most common type of degree for Higher Education. It will normally take you around 3 years to complete your studies and be awarded a bachelor's degree in the UK. However, some programs will take 4 years to complete, which includes 1 year of professional experience.

Popular bachelor's degrees for students in the UK:

  • Bachelor of Laws (LB)
  • Bachelor of Education (B.Ed)
  • Bachelor of Arts (BA)
  • Bachelor of Science (BSc )
  • Master's degree

Graduates of the master's degree must meet the exit requirements of deep and solid expertise, able to apply practical knowledge based on the needs of the company. The length of time to complete a master's course will usually be based on the type of degree the student chooses, most commonly a Master of Arts (MA) and a Master of Science (MS or M.Sc.). The typical master's course has a fairly short study time, about 1-2 years.

In addition, universities also have integrated master's courses, for those who want to shorten their study time and costs. Students enrolled in this program can study for an additional year of a Master's program after completing the course or for obtaining a bachelor's degree. Master's degrees in the UK are generally classified into two categories:

  • Master coursework/master taught-course: Students will have regular classes in the first half of the course and study in the other sections. The assessment is based on the results of the test and the final exam.
  • Research Masters Degree: Students must work independently on one or more extensive research projects and submit a thesis at the end of the course.
  • Ph.D

To study for a PhD in the UK, students need to first complete a master's degree in their chosen field. In addition, they will have to work on a research topic initially and then conduct research to submit a thorough thesis. It takes about three to four years to get a PhD in the UK.

The QAA or Quality Assurance Agency is an independent body that regularly assesses the educational standards of all public colleges and universities in the UK. The agency will also have to ensure that all students have access to the best quality of learning, research, and teaching with any course students enroll in.  

 Education credit system in the UK

Academic credit or university credit is an essential part of the UK and UK education system in particular. Through the Credit Transfer and Accumulation Scheme (CATS), UK universities are able to track and document student achievement for different programmes, courses. Usually, one credit is equivalent to 10 hours of study, and every degree has different credit requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree: 300 credits required
  • Bachelor's degree with honors: 360 credits
  • Master's degree: 180 credits
  • Integrated master's degree: 480 credits
  • Doctoral degree: 540 credits
